Small Space / Large View

The Story Behind the Pictures

SMALL SPACE / LARGE VIEW

This project was quite the challenge. While the view was spectacular, the interior configuration was less so, encumbered with unfortunately placed pillars, multiple levels, and dangerous steps. While there was nothing to be done about the pillars holding up the second floor, there was much that could be done to improve the functionality and safety of the upper level by reconfiguring the stairs and adding a bit to both the sitting room and adjacent dining room floor.

The old fireplace got a fresh face with an elevated gas insert surrounded by glass mosaics and a floating concrete hearth and mantle. Moving the electronics from the higher level to the lower provided a better TV viewing experience, leaving more room on the upper level for a proper library and sitting area. Lack of storage was a big concern, addressed with roomy new floor to ceiling cabinetry. The biggest impact, though, is the dynamic wood floor laid on an angle to draw your eye to the deck and the expansive view just beyond. In spite of the pillars, the setting now honors its view while better serving it’s owners.
