Adaptive Use
Anticipating the arrival of an aging parent, the basement of this typical 60′s era home was transformed into a sophisticated assisted living apartment. Designed with lots of open space for easy maneuverability with a walker, the apartment provides for the needs of the parent and caregiver.
In the bathroom the tub was replaced with an easy access shower. The laundry area, with its triple bypass doors, houses a stack washer/dryer, a drop down folding table, and ample, easy to reach storage. Handrails and an elevated seat can be added in the toilet area as needed.
In the living room an old utility closet was closed off, the space now used to house a kitchenette with a microwave, refrigerator, and sink. Tightly woven commercial carpet provides a wheel-friendly surface as well as warmth and sound control. A large screen TV and comfortable seating make viewing and conversation easy.
The bedroom, accessible on a clear path from the kitchen and bathroom, houses two twin beds, the lighting controlled from bedside switches. The closet, with its triple-bypass door system, now has easy access clothing storage and its own lighting system. The window treatment can be operated from the top down or from the bottom up, allowing privacy and light control options.
Not shown is the stairway to the upstairs. A stair elevator can be added at a later time.
